Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent is the second novel from Veronica Roth in the series.

In the previous novel, Tris Prior discovered she was Divergent, fell in love with Dauntless leader Four, discovered a plot by the Erudite to overthrow the Abnegation faction, and lead a city wide revolt within the factions.

If you don't know what I am talking about, you better read Divergent, as this novel has no recap, it just continues the plot and action from where we left off.

Tris and the gang have left the confines of future Chicago, where they hide out with the peaceful Amity faction. With the Erudite leader poised to take over, Tris and Four meet the leader of the factionless, Evelyn - Four's mother, believed to be dead. They work within Candor headquarters to overthrow the Erudite, and realizing Evelyn herself wants to be in power of the city. Tris is taken by Erudite and forced to endure experimental serum simulations. All of the action surrounds some secret knowledge protected by Abnegation for years, which the Erudite want hidden and the Dauntless want exposed. When it is released to the population, it will change society forever and reveal what the factions were for.

In comparison this was not as good as books one or three, but still briskly plot driven. For me there was just repeated planning and attacking, continuing the story without breaking too much new ground. While the first book mainly dealt with Dauntless and Erudite, this one reveals more about Candor and Amity factions. The characters held my interest throughout, but it's really about rolling the plot forward. Tris is still sixteen, and has grown into a Dauntless leader, despite people fearing the Divergent. Other characters are exposed as Divergent when Erudite test experimental serums on the population. Again, no one is safe as Divergent are shot on sight, even the eleven year olds, point blank. As the Factionless take power, the information is broadcast from Erudite, giving Insurgent a final twist and opening lots of questions for the next book.

If this kind of book interests you, you won't be disappointed. Recommended.
