Just Getting Started by Tony Bennett

Just Getting Started by Tony Bennett is a memoir, not so much of his life, but of those he knew over the years that shaped his life and career. His 2012 book Life Is A Gift was about life lessons he wanted to share, and this is about those people around him that inspired.

Bob Hope, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lady Gaga, Rosemary Clooney, Judy Garland, Harold Arlen, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Lena Horne, Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Pearl Bailey, Nat 'King' Cole, Amy Winehouse, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are some of the many people he reminiscises about. I've read a lot of biographies, and found these stories fresh and interesting - those who I knew of, and those I didn't.

Tony Bennett was in show business for over seventy years (he passed away in June 2023) and has been around it all. Some interesting stories were with Bob Hope - when he renamed the young Anthony Dominic Benedetto Tony Bennett - and the creation of his signature song I Left My Heart In San Fransisco. Some people today might not remember who Harold Arlen was, but when you add he wrote some of the classic songs like Over The Rainbow, One For My Baby and That Old Black Magic, you'll find his memories of working with these musical greats very interesting.

Between each section there are pictures of his paintings and drawings, he is an accomplished artist as well as singer.

Recommended for those whose biographies or show business - after seventy years performing, Bennett gives us a glimpse into the music of our time.
