Me by Ricky Martin

Me is the candid and inspiring memoir by Ricky Martin, who went from group member of Menudo to solo artist to International singing star. This above the many memoirs I have read is imbued with the spirit of a seeker on life's journey. Spiritual, reflective, and honest, he has come through the storm of celebrity into a better place.

This is more than a memoir of singing and fame. Enrique Martin Morales was influenced by his grandmother, an artist into metaphysics, who encouraged his talent. In 1983 he joined the internationally famous Latin pop group Menudo, and learned a strong work ethic while touring the world. After five years, he left to record solo albums and act on General Hospital, had long term love affairs with women and men, and then hit the jackpot with "Livin' la Vida Loca" and the anthem to the 1998 World Cup "The Cup of Life". These sent him into the fame stratosphere and extra personal scrutiny, notably from Barbara Walters who specifically said she wouldn't ask about his sexuality, and then ambushed him on camera. Time spent in India helped him refocus away from the spotlight and with the help of a surrogate, he has two sons.

There is much following his story as this memoir only dates to 2010, but his open honesty at looking at life shows the path of a true seeker, and is refreshing. If you are interested in pop music, he has stories of his career (working with Madonna, the explosion of fame), but this is also an exploration of art and self acceptance. His bold, staring eyes on the cover clearly invite you in - I would keep this book around just for that photo.

A pleasure to read.
