Snowblind by Christopher Golden

Snowblind is a quick thriller I picked up as a plane book - the book I bring to the airport and read while waiting to board, on the plane, and to my destination - usually leaving behind for someone to pick up. I was intrigued by the mysterious goings-on in a heavy snowstorm, and I'm always looking for something scary. This fit the bill.

Twelve years ago, the city of Coventry was hit by a terrible snowstorm and we follow various residents as the snow blows in. With the roads closed and power going out, people are split up, and others are thrown together. But this is more than a killer storm - something is moving with it! and several characters are swept away into the night, found dead the next morning.

Present day, we find the survivors haunted by the event, most are unable to move on. They fear another storm is blowing in, and they are right - only this time they will have help. Several of the missing have mysteriously returned to Coventry as they prepare to wage war with whatever is out there in the snow.

Snowblind is interesting and well written by Christopher Golden, but for me not exceptional. He's written several fantasy series as well as Buffy The Vampire Slayer novels and media tie-ins. With a blurb from Stephen King saying it was 'deeply scary...the real deal'... I was hoping for sleepless nights, jitters and possible night terrors, but it was just ok.

If anything, a little to heavy on the sentiment.

I was entertained for the few hours of my flight and someone at the airport got a free book when I left it at the other end. I'd love to read something really scary, and for me this wasn't it.
