The One by John Marrs

I could not put this page-turner down.

I read all 438 pages in one go.

This inspired the Netflix series The One, but only shares the premise of DNA matching.

This novel by bestselling author John Marrs is far more creative and captivating. This story is completely separate and new, following five main characters who decide to be Matched. Played out in alternating chapters, loaded with twists and ending on inventive cliffhangers.

It was so fun to read late into the night.

Match Your DNA is a global company surpassing Facebook, Apple, and Amazon with over a billion people registering their DNA to find their one genetic Match. No more dating or wondering if you were meant to be together, the science is indisputable and flawless. It has helped millions of people find true love regardless of race, ethnicity, sexuality, or religion - while sometimes breaking up unmatched marriages.

We follow five characters in separate storylines to see their results; Jade, a young woman matched with a handsome young man; Nick and Sally, who are engaged but do the test to be sure they are right for each other (who thought that was a good idea?); Mandy who has been widowed, no children; Christopher, serious and unattached; and Ellie - a high-powered London CEO, who also happens to be the one who invented the program. Each are irrevocably Matched, for better or worse.

What if your Match lived on the other side of the world? What if they were the same sex? What if they were injured, institutionalized...or deceased? What if they were a murderer or criminal? What if they were not your husband, but his brother? Would you leave your life partner for your Match? One thing is for sure, though science or fate, when you meet your Match you feel electric fireworks, and you know in your heart that you are soulmates. It's worth everything to be together.

But what if being Matched is a fraud?

I'll give you a heads up: as much as I loved this thriller, there is a character who stands out from the others, whose chapters seem out of tone for this novel. There is a serial killer, the reader's knowledge of which adds some vicarious excitement. However, there are a few murders described that almost made me stop right there, that's not what I'm here for. That the victims are numbered and killed off without remorse was creepy enough, but twice we get violence detail that seems out of place for this novel. The One is a thriller about personal relationships, so I found it a little jarring, not everyone is in the mood for that.

Then again, who knows who you will be Matched with.
